Woodworking Key #1: For crosscut guides use a stair gauge.
Clamp them to your carpenter's square, and make sure they match your stair jack's rise and run. Then use a pencil to mark the notches.
Put them on your carpenter's square guide for a great cut.
Woodworking Key #2: Dry fittings before applying glue.
If you're trying to fix things up after you have glue on your piece, there is a chance that you're going to damage the project.
A dry-fit is optimal to do before incorporating glue on your wood.
Woodworking Key #3: Use a golf too to fix loose interior hinges.
A golf tee provides a quick and easy fix for loose interior door hinges.
Remove hinges and door from door frame and lightly tap one golf tee inside each of the screw holes.
Trim off the end of the tee still sticking out and hang the door again.
The screw has something to bite on with the golf tee.
Woodworking Key #4: Always check the condition of the blade before sawing
Dull blades make sawing take 2-3 times longer AND they require a lot of sanding afterwards, thus making a job take up to 6 times longer than it would with a clean blade.
Woodworking Key #5: Make sure to get the right type of wood.
For table tops, avoid using pine or other soft woods because the top will get scratched easily.
Also consider that woods will have different colors by the time they're finished.
Woodworking Key #6: Patience is paramount. Rushing a job will cost you more time in the long run.
Patience is paramount. Many people begin woodworking then get frustrated when things don't materialize quickly enough. This is when mistakes happen.
You can’t expect to be as fast as an experienced woodworker from day 1. Worry about getting faster when you have done 3 or more projects and you have a great handle on things.
In the beginning it pays to take twice as long, but make less mistakes. You will have no regrets in the long run with this approach.
Woodworking Key #7: Follow proven woodworking plans
Don’t try to make your own custom plans from scratch. There are thousands of step-by-step woodworking plans out there. It’s easier to build a proven plan, or to customise from a preexisting plan, than to start from nothing and create something. Especially if you are inexperienced.
